I recently rediscovered an exellent book that I first came across about 10 years ago. It’s called Cartooning: The Art and the Business by Mort Gerberg.  It covers everything from tools that different cartoonists use to all the different markets for cartoonists.  It has a lot of “behind the scenes” stories.  One in particular that I found interesting was in the chapter on spot illustrations:

Slackman, whom I think of as the “Crosshatch King,” draws “same size”; the original art is about 2 1/2 inches square. When he delivers his finishes, he carries them in his wallet.
